What’s on in Chester
The city’s annual rhythm — fifteen race days, a medieval parade, open-air theatre in the park, a marathon and a Christmas market — and what is still to come this year.
Chester runs on an annual calendar that barely changes. The racing season frames it, the Midsummer Watch fills the streets in June, Grosvenor Park turns into a theatre for two months of the summer, and from mid-November Town Hall Square becomes a Christmas market.
Dates shift a little each year. This page gives the pattern, with the confirmed 2026 dates where they are published — but always check the organiser before you travel.
The four fixed points
Spring

The racing season opens with the Boodles May Festival, three consecutive days in the first full week of May — Trials Day, Ladies Day and Chester Cup Day. In 2026 they fell on 6, 7 and 8 May. It is the single biggest thing that happens in Chester all year: the city fills, hotels sell out months ahead, and the whole centre dresses up.
Around it sit the Chester Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festival at the racecourse over the Easter weekend, and a growing run of spring events at the zoo. If you want the city at its quietest and prettiest, come in late March or April, before any of it starts.
Summer

The Midsummer Watch Parade is the one to plan around. It revives the medieval civic procession that once opened the Mystery Plays — giant figures, drummers, beasts and hundreds of costumed performers moving through the streets over a weekend in late June. In 2026 it ran on 20 and 21 June. It is free, it is genuinely strange, and it is the most Chester thing that happens all year.
Storyhouse in the Park takes over Grosvenor Park from early July to early September with a repertory season of open-air theatre — usually a Shakespeare, a classic and a family show, running in rotation on a temporary stage under the trees. The 2026 season ran from 3 July to 6 September.
The racecourse keeps going through the summer with evening and music meetings, a Roman Day for families in late May, a midsummer meeting in July and a Ladies Day in August. Chester Pride takes over Castle Square in mid-August, and the Chester Raft Race puts a lot of homemade craft on the Dee in July.
Autumn

The racing season closes with the two-day Autumn Festival in mid-September and a season finale the following weekend. After that the city gets its streets back.
The Chester Marathon runs in early October — 11 October in 2026 — starting and finishing at the racecourse and looping out into Cheshire and across the Welsh border. It is a fast, flat, popular course, and roads through the centre are affected on the day.
From mid-November Lanterns and Light at Chester Zoo takes over the winter evenings, running from 13 November 2026 through to 3 January 2027, and Storyhouse opens its Christmas show — Rapunzel this year, from 4 December.

The Chester Christmas Market is the big one: wooden chalets filling Town Hall Square in front of the cathedral, open from 18 November to 22 December in 2026. It is unusually well sited — Victorian Gothic town hall on one side, cathedral on the other — and it stays open into the evening.
Chester Market in Exchange Square runs alongside it and is open until 10pm from Tuesday to Saturday, which makes it the obvious place to eat afterwards. And the Rows are covered, so Christmas shopping here is one of the few places in England where the weather is not really a factor.
And once every five years
The Chester Mystery Plays.
The full cycle of the Chester Mystery Plays is staged roughly every five years, most recently in 2023 in the nave of the cathedral. The next production is planned for 2028. It is presented largely by people who live in the city, under professional direction, and tickets go on sale well in advance and sell out. If you are planning a trip around it, start looking in 2027.

Two pieces of practical advice. First, book early for the May Festival. Accommodation across the city and well outside it goes months ahead and prices roughly double; if you are coming for the buildings rather than the horses, avoid that week entirely.
Second, check before you travel. Dates move year to year. The racecourse publishes its fixture list the previous autumn, Storyhouse announces the park season in spring, and Visit Cheshire keeps the general listings.
